How to join cosmetic industry?
1. Complete a Science Degree – Many people practice and learn online to become cosmetic chemists. However, the best approach is to get a science degree first. The commonly chosen degrees include bachelors in chemical engineering, chemistry, microbiology, or biology. Some physics majors also pursue this profession, which is not an obstacle either.
Do chemical engineers work in cosmetics?
Every day, millions of people around the world look in the mirror, open their eyes wide, and brush mascara onto their lashes. For many of these people, picking up the tube and painting their lashes is an unconscious part of their daily routine. But to a chemical engineer, mascara is anything but commonplace—it’s carbon black and iron oxide, with a polymer to form a film that coats the lashes, combined with preservatives and thickening waxes such as lanolin, mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum, castor oil, carnauba or candelilla wax.
- That’s because, without chemical engineers, mascara wouldn’t be the incredible product that it is today.
- I wanted to create something that really made a difference in the user’s quality of life.
- Prashansa Desai, Senior Chemist, L’Oréal Chemical engineers and chemists are responsible for the vast majority of products we use every day, from the paint on our walls, to the gas in our cars—to makeup and personal care products.
Chemists and chemical engineers are important in the cosmetics and personal care industry, innovating the chemical formulations that make lipsticks last, mascaras waterproof, and lotions hydrating. And when cosmetics companies are looking for world-class chemists and chemical engineers for formulating cosmetics, they turn to Carnegie Mellon’s Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces (CPS) program,
- Cosmetics are composed of many ingredients,” says Annette Jacobson, teaching professor of chemical engineering and Director of the CPS program.
- These ingredients include colloids, which are very fine particles such as pigments; polymers, which are large molecules that help disperse the pigment or provide important properties to the product; and surfaces, created at the interface s between these fine particles and the liquids they are dispersed into.
Colloids and polymers are combined in unique ways to create cosmetics, but if they don’t spread and adhere properly to the intended surface—in this case, your face or skin—then they aren’t worth very much at all.” Source: L’Oréal CPS alumna Prashansa Desai testing hair mousse in the lab. This emphasis on understanding the surface or interfacial side of things is unique to Carnegie Mellon’s CPS program, and the reason that many graduates find themselves with job opportunities at companies in the cosmetics and personal care industry.
Prashansa Desai, who graduated from the program in 2014, now works on the Hair Care and Styling Team at L’Oréal, where she creates new and exciting products, investigates novel ingredients, and experiments in the lab to come up with innovative hair care and styling formulas, which she then tests on actual hair to evaluate its performance.
“I was always fascinated by the chemistry behind the products we use in our daily lives,” says Prashansa. “So I started looking into the ingredients of the products I use, and studying their interactions at molecular level. And soon, I wanted to create something that really made a difference in the user’s quality of life.” According to Prashansa, her time in the CPS program was an integral stepping stone that helped her get into the industry.
- Because of the program’s balance of hands-on experimentation and theoretical study, she was able to spend a good fraction of her time in the lab, playing with the practical applications of the concepts she was learning in the classroom.
- For anyone hoping to build a future in the cosmetics industry,” Prashansa says, “Though you can learn to formulate on the job, you must be sure to have your chemistry base clear and strong.
Be passionate about creating new products, and develop an acute inquisitiveness. Start questioning everything you see. Take the research-oriented approach. And lastly, don’t be frustrated by trial and error.” Graduates from the CPS Program have had internships and full-time employment at companies such as L’Oréal, Estee Lauder, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt Benckiser (Lysol), Johnson & Johnson, Merck and PPG.

Is chemical engineer a stressful job?
A recent post by Wealth of Geeks, and shared on WRAL Techwire, listed a job as a chemical engineer as one of the top 10 low-stress careers that pay more than $100K a year. Long hours may not necessarily mean a job is stressful, but in our annual Job Satisfaction and Salary Survey, many of our respondents each year complain that while the pay is great, the workload and long hours certainly are not ideal.
In fact, here’s what a few of our respondents had to say in this year’s survey about their “low-stress” jobs: ” pretty good on paper, but not so much when counting the extra hours we are putting in to get the workload covered.” “Current lack of tech talent means those who are working have an extreme workload.” “Compensation and benefits are quite good but the workload is not manageable and little recognition of extra effort put in to meet the demands.” “I recently moved from a specialty chemical manufacturing company, where I was in a supervisory position, getting calls on nights and weekends and the workload was untenable, to a soap manufacturer as an individual contributor, as such, I took a pay cut.
This is hard to bear having experience pay discrimination throughout my career.” “The pandemic has made my workload increase as now I spend more time and effort on the logistics side of my job.” Some survey participants even warned potential recruits when giving them advice about a career in chemical engineering: “Prepare for long hours and be realistic about deadlines.” “Be prepared to work long hours, weekends and holidays.
You will be away from home a lot.” “Hard work, long days, failure, learning and dedication are a must to advance within an organization and your career. Learn everything about your job and those jobs around you. Once you establish yourself, you can cruise. Until then, you aren’t entitled to anything.” The Wealth of Geeks article doesn’t say where they got their data to determine chemical engineering as #7 on the list of low-intensity work, or how they arrived at $105,500 for the average salary, which seems lower than current industry salary surveys.
The lack of transparency leaves me a bit skeptical on its accuracy. Other careers sharing the list primarily are in research or academia. The article also defined what chemical engineers do as: “chemical engineers work to design chemical plant equipment and devise processes used to manufacture products like gasoline, plastic and cement.
They also outline procedures to keep people safe when they are working in close proximity to chemicals.” By this definition, chemical engineers do appear to have a low-stress job, but anyone can tell you from our salary survey it is anything but. The good news is, despite reports of long hours, most chemical engineers truly love what they do.
Just take a look at our annual job satisfaction and salary survey results, where 92% of our respondents report their happy with their jobs. What do you think? Do you agree with chemical engineering being on the list of low-stress jobs? Or is this job not for the meek? Having conducted our salary survey for over a decade, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
